01Approach

Markell Coffee Co. is a green coffee merchant. We travel to origin and buy from the people who grow and process the coffee — today across the highlands of northern Thailand, and gradually further across Asia. The relationship runs both ways: the grower knows where the coffee goes, the roaster knows where it came from.

Each lot is evaluated, priced and shipped on its own terms, which keeps the decision on the coffee rather than on a forecast.

  1. Specialty roasters

    Looking for a defined lot, with its farm, altitude and process documented, in quantities of a few bags.

  2. Roasters seeking a named origin

    Working at larger volume but wanting a traceable Asian origin rather than an anonymous blend component.

  3. Houses looking for a single lot

    A competition lot, a rare variety or an unusual process, bought once and not repeated.

03Principles

  1. Direct relationship

    We deal with the producer or the producer group, not with a chain of resellers.

  2. Evaluation before commitment

    No lot is bought on description alone. It is cupped and assessed first.

  3. Traceability

    Farm or cooperative, altitude, variety, process and harvest travel with each lot.

  4. Documents with the coffee

    The origin and traceability documents travel with the coffee, including what is required on import into the European Union.
